When was the last time you tried something new? When was the last time you done something you've always wanted to do? Or maybe it was something that has always scared you…
Trying something new can be a great way of bringing a hit of dopamine (feeling of satisfaction) to your body.
Imagine there has been a sport or activity that you've always wanted to try but keep putting off. Eventually you give it a go and now you love it - you've remembered what its like to have that adrenaline rush, release of endorphins and sense of pride.
You are creating a sense of purpose, something that gets you excited and if its physical even better. This then has a huge positive impact on your physical and mental health.
However like most things in life trying something new can be scary. So what holds us back?
FEAR! - this is what holds us back.
Stepping out of our comfort zone makes us feel uncomfortable and even scared. This then prevents us from getting that hit of the feel good chemical, the opportunity to develop and build confidence. The door to avoidance opens and we step straight through.
The challenges of trying a new hobbie or experience are normal and not loving it right away is part of being human. Enjoyment will come and if it doesn't you've built your confidence and ability to give something a go with less fear. That door of avoidance begins to close and a door of opportunity begins to creep open.
Ready to try something new?
HOW TO...
In order to try something new you need to establish what that is. Ask yourself:
- What makes you happy?
- What do you look forward to?
- What do you want to do more of?
- What interests you?
- What makes your partner, family or friends happy? build your relationships with them through a mutual activity.
Some of the answers to these questions should guide you to picking something worthy and fun.
When you have established what it is, create a plan. Like every other goal make sure you start simple and having a step by step plan will make it more likely to succeed and be less stressful. On average trying something new can take 66 days to become a habit or part of your routine so give it some time too.
You won't like everything you try but you might just find something you love. Giving more things a go in general has so many positive impacts on your mental and physical health it's hard to find a reason not to.
You'll feel happier for it - trust me.
